Tuberculosis

A diagnosis of tuberculosis, which is a disease caused by bacteria that infects the lungs, can be frightening to you and your child. You should know that most tuberculosis treatment can take place without an overnight stay at the hospital. If your child needs hospitalization, our pulmonologists do whatever it takes to treat pediatric tuberculosis and keep your child as comfortable as possible.

At Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, we offer comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services for children who react positively to the tuberculin skin test.

How We Diagnose Pediatric Tuberculosis

To diagnose pediatric tuberculosis (TB), the tuberculin skin test (also known as the PPD test) is performed by injecting a small amount of TB protein under the top layer of skin on the forearm.

If your child has been infected with TB, the skin will react by producing a firm, red bump on the area within 48 hours. The diameter of the red bump will be measured to be certain the test is positive, and if the size meets the criteria, your child will need to receive further evaluation, including a chest X-ray and laboratory studies.

Tuberculosis treatment will be prescribed, and your child will be monitored throughout the duration of treatment.
