Metabolism

Metabolism is a collection of chemical reactions that takes place in the body's cells to convert the fuel in the food we eat into the energy needed to power everything we do, from moving to thinking to growing. Specific proteins in the body control the chemical reactions of metabolism, and each chemical reaction is coordinated with other body functions. In fact, thousands of metabolic reactions happen at the same time - all regulated by the body - to keep our cells healthy and working.

Most disorders of metabolism involve either abnormal levels of enzymes of hormones or problems with the functioning of those enzymes or hormones. When the metabolism of body chemicals is blocked or defective, it can cause a buildup of toxic substances in the body or a deficiency of substances needed for normal body function, either of which can lead to serious symptoms.

Some metabolic diseases are inherited. These conditions are called inborn errors of metabolism. Examples of metabolic disorders and conditions include G6PD deficiency, galactosemia, hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, phenylketonuria, type 1 diabetes mellitus and type 2 diabetes.

At Nemours, the specialty of metabolism is combined with other specialties such as genetics and endocrinology. Nemours physicians use an integrated medical record that unifies patient care across specialties and locations, prompting physicians to consider best practices gained from Nemours experience and academic literature. We provide excellent care that places the patient and family at the center, and our commitment to communication is central to the process. We strive to create a uniquely satisfying experience bringing peace of mind to patients and families.

Nemours locations offer a range of metabolism and related services. Please refer to the sites listed to the left for specific services available at each location.
