Help Your Child Get a Nemours BrightStart!

Nemours BrightStart! tools, resources, services, and training can help ensure that every child receives a bright start on the road to reading success.

Screening Process

Nemours BrightStart! reading readiness screenings are very child-friendly. Specially trained staff work one-on-one with the child to check his or her knowledge of print, letter names, sounds, and listening skills that support the abilities required in learning to read.

The screening only takes about 10 minutes. If a child has trouble with these skills, Nemours BrightStart! may provide direct services including special early literacy instruction, or offer guidance for parents and teachers to help the child build these skills and become better prepared for reading success.

Mobile Units 

Our state-of-the-art mobile classrooms bring Nemours BrightStart! expertise out to you. We provide screening, instruction, and general information at events in communities throughout the year.

A Parent's Guide to Reading Readiness

This guide gives parents of children age 3 to 5 information on how to support their child on his or her reading journey. Along with invaluable advice, the book provides (available in English or Spanish):

  • A checklist of reading readiness skills
    for pre-kindergarteners
  • Lists of children’s books to read aloud
    that work on specific literacy skills
  • Fun activities to do at home to prepare children
    to learn to read
Milestone Map

This full-color illustrated poster addresses parents' and teachers' concerns about children's reading readiness and progress. It includes milestones and warning signs indicating when children may be at risk for reading challenges from birth through age 6.

By tracking along with this simple map, parents can be sure their children are keeping up with their peers and intercede if they begin to notice warning signs of dyslexia or reading failure. Available in English or Spanish.
