Lewis Elementary Student Wins Timoneers Challenge
When all was said and done, the name of Kierah McGill, 9, of Wilmington, was selected at random from among hundreds of entries in the Timoneers Challenge, a summer-long contest sponsored by Nemours Health and Prevention Services. The contest challenged kids to try the 5-2-1-Almost None lifestyle in a variety of ways, including keeping a TV log, being physically active no matter what the weather, eating more fruits and vegetables, helping with family meals, and drinking more water and low fat milk, and less of the sugary stuff.
Students statewide received their challenge booklets during the last few weeks of school. They were asked to complete all 20 missions, and have the entry card in the booklet signed by a parent/guardian and returned to Nemours in order to be eligible for the grand prize drawing. At stake? An all-expenses paid trip to Disney World in Florida, including airfare, hotel accommodations and park admissions.
Notified that she had won the contest, Kierah, a student at William C. Lewis Elementary School in the Christina School District, was thrilled. She, her mother and grandmother plan to take the vacation in May 2011 to celebrate Kierah’s 10th birthday. Kierah said the challenge was fun and easy to do and that she is “veeeeeeery excited” about the upcoming trip. Kierah felt that the best lesson she learned by participating in the challenge was to forego sugary drinks and choose water and milk instead. Congratulations and good for you, Kierah!
Nemours reminds families to practice the 5-2-1-Almost None healthy habits:
- Eat five or more fruits and vegetables a day.
- Limit TV and other screen time to no more than two hours a day.
- Get at least one hour of daily physical activity.
- Limit sodas and sugary drinks to almost none.
