Eight-year-old Kyra was enjoying a riding lesson on a late fall day. When the young equestrian gave the command to stop, the horse halted abruptly, sending Kyra over its head. The impact of the head-first crash was so powerful it cracked her riding helmet. Kyra was rushed to Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, where the trauma team rapidly responded to her injury, diagnosing two fractures in the vertebrae of her neck. With stabilization of the fractures and skilled treatment during hospitalization, Kyra had an excellent outcome from a potentially life-changing injury.
