Search Techniques

Search teams will only assist in the evacuation and conduct area searches. They will not attempt to neutralize, remove, or otherwise have contact with the device. The removal or disarming of a bomb must be left to the professionals in explosive ordnance disposal.
If a device is located, it should not be disturbed. However, its location should be well marked without physically contacting the suspicious package/ device, and the search team’s route back to the device noted.
To be proficient in searching the building, search teams will consist of a Security Officer and an area occupant.
The Command Center will track search teams, maintain blueprints of floor diagrams and maintain a roster of all necessary telephone numbers.
Search Technique: The following interior room technique should be employed once a search team (two person minimum) enters a room to be searched. If no specific area has been defined, first areas to search should be those easily accessible to the public (i.e. lobbies, bathrooms, etc.).
- DO NOT TOUCH any suspicious or out of place object. Note its location and description and report it to the Command Center by dialing 53 5555
- If suspicious package is located; it will be cordoned off with a safe zone in every direction including the floor above and below
- When possible search teams of no less than two people per team will be dispatched

The priority of an evacuation will consist of (1) the area in the immediate vicinity of the threat, if known; (2) the floor above and below the threat to remove those persons from danger as quickly as possible, and, if deemed necessary, the entire building.
