  • Recognition of Suspicious Packages and Letters:
    • Unidentified package with an uneven weight distribution
    • Unusual odor, excessive wrapping, grease marks
    • Visible wiring or tinfoil
    • Unusually heavy for size
    • Rigid contents in a flexible envelope
    • Poor handwriting, spelling, or too many stamps affixed to package/envelope
    • Hand delivered by an unknown source
  • Place package or letter in an isolated area. Do not tamper with the package.
  • Immediately call 53 5555 to report possible threat
  • Do not use two-way radios or cell phones
  • Threat must be cleared before resuming use of these items

FACILITY ALERT - SPILL RESPONSE

  1. Immediate action:
    • Assess the type of spill and degree of hazard involved.
    • Notify all employees in the same area that a spill has occurred
    • Place wet floor signs around spill to avoid slips and falls
    • Secure the area to prevent the spread of infectious agents and to restrict access preventing the exposure of additional personnel
    • Determine the most effective and least hazardous approach to clean-up
    • Decontaminate the area
  2. Spill on Floor hard surfaces
    • Place wet floor signs around spill to avoid slips and falls
    • Use proper personal protective equipment (PPE)
    • Flood area with disinfectant solution. DO NOT LET MOP HEAD TOUCH CONTAMINATED SURFACE. Let stand for 10 minutes for disinfectant to neutralize spill.
    • Pick up spill using mop and bucket or wet vacuum
    • Leave wet floor signs out until floor is completely dry
    • Dispose of dirty water and clean mop bucket or wet vacuum
    • Change soiled mop head and place in plastic liner for the laundry
    • Remove all contaminated clothing. All contaminated material must be contained while in the restricted area
    • Dispose of contaminated material according to established procedure.
  3. Spill on carpeted surface
    • Place wet floor signs around spill to avoid slips and falls
    • Use proper personal protective equipment (PPE)
    • Flood area with disinfectant solution. DO NOT LET MOP HEAD TOUCH CONTAMINATED SURFACE. Let stand for 10 minutes for disinfectant to neutralize spill.
    • Pick up spill using wet vacuum
    • Leave wet floor signs out until floor is completely dry
    • Dispose of dirty water and clean wet vacuum
    • Remove all contaminated clothing. All contaminated material must be contained while in the restricted area
    • Dispose of contaminated material according to established procedure.

Response to Infectious Waste Spill:

  • Assess the damage and danger of the spill. Determine the type of spill, degree of hazard, most effective, and least hazardous approach to cleanup. Assure appropriate safety alarms have been activated
  • Limit access to the spill area. Notify associate , patients, and visitors as require.
  • Assemble and use the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Dike the spill to prevent spreading
  • Block access to the sewer to prevent the material from entering the sewer, if required by state or local regulation
  • Absorb liquids with the appropriate materials. Use the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) to determine which material to use. Absorbent materials are bicarbonate of soda, vermiculite, beta chips, dried clay or sand
  • Transfer absorbed material into suitable container
  • Disinfect the area where the spill occurred
  • Remove the contaminated clothing while inside contaminated area and perform hand hygiene
  • Document the incident
