R. Jay Cummings, MD, became a Vice President in 2006, joining the Executive Team of Nemours. He was appointed Chief Medical Officer for Nemours in Florida in 2015 and his medical leadership role includes responsibility for Nemours locations throughout Florida, Jacksonville, Orlando and Pensacola.
Dr. Cummings most recently served as Medical Director of Nemours Children’s Specialty Care in Jacksonville, where he began his career with Nemours in 1987. He has also served as Nemours Division Chief of Orthopedics, and holds the academic title of Associate Professor, Department of Orthopedics, at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine.
Dr. Cummings was born in Louisville, Ky. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga, and his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Ga. He completed an internship at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, and an orthopedic residency at the Combined Georgia Baptist-Scottish Rite Residency Training Program in Atlanta, Ga.
Dr. Cummings is a member of, and served on the Board of Directors for the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America. He is also a member of numerous other professional groups such as the American Orthopaedic Association, the Scoliosis Research Society, American Medical Association, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and Societe International de Chirurgie Orthopedique et de Traumatologie.
He and his wife, Barbara, live in Jacksonville, Fla. They have three sons, Bradley, Spencer and Travis. He enjoys golfing, sailing and traveling.
