Wilmington, DE  — Wilma Berends, RN, has been appointed Director, Cardiac Center Nursing at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children. Berends, a native of the Netherlands who began her career in Europe, was nurse manager of the cardiac intensive care unit (CICU) at Clinique de Genolier in Switzerland before joining Nemours. She helped to plan and establish the Nemours Cardiac Center and has served as nurse manager of the cardiac intensive care unit since 1998.

At Nemours, Berends has been credited with exemplary leadership, extraordinarily high staff retention and consistently high levels of patient satisfaction over more than a decade. In 2010, as Interim Director, Cardiac Center Nursing, she led the expansion of the cardiac ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) program and provided insight and expertise during an expansion of the center’s CICU and nursing unit.

Louanne Stratton, PhD, RN, Chief Nurse Executive, said, “Wilma Berends has set the standard for high performance and has been pivotal in helping us develop family-centered care and a service of excellence at the Nemours Cardiac Center. We look forward to her continued outstanding leadership.”

Berends said of her appointment, “I came to Nemours planning to stay for a year or so to help build the cardiac program. Fourteen years later, I am still here, which speaks volumes about the people I work with. They are not only an extremely professional, skilled and dedicated group, they have become my second family.”

Berends is also president of the Delaware Chapter of Hearts with Hope, a charitable organization that makes yearly trips to Peru to provide care and surgery for children with congenital heart disease. The next two-week trip is scheduled for October 21, 2011. Their goal is not only to offer needed treatment but to train local providers in Peru so that they are able to offer this care in the future.

Berends resides with her daughter in Wilmington, Delaware.
