A brand new fleet of three Nemours-owned ambulances provides door-to-door service for patients.

July 1, 2012, marked the one-year anniversary of the Nemours Kids Transport Program, a service owned, operated, and staffed by Nemours, and one that introduces the "Nemours Experience" to patients and their families immediately.

With a fleet of three Nemours-owned ambulances, the referral only Nemours Kids Transport Program is not a 911 emergency service, but rather a critical care specialty service that primarily transports patients from other licensed health care facilities to Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children for specialized pediatric care and support.

Functioning as a mobile intensive care unit, the Nemours Kids Transport Team includes pediatric critical care physicians and nurses, respiratory therapists, emergency medical technicians, and communications specialists. Neonatal nurse practitioners and neonatologists are also available for specific neonatal intensive care transports.

The program provides transportation from partnering hospitals, as well as support other Nemours programs including the Palliative Care Program, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), cardiology, and ECMO — a technique of providing respiratory support.

"The Palliative Care Team takes care of a wide variety of patients in varying stages of illness," said Dr. Elissa G. Miller, director of the Palliative Care Program at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children. "It has been wonderful to know that some of our sickest patients — those who are being discharged to home on hospice — are able to receive expert Nemours care all the way to their own front door."

About Nemours
