A Night at Nemours to Benefit Emergency Department of duPont Hospital for Children

Wednesday, May 11, 2011

Wilmington, DE — A Night at Nemours, the sixth annual black-tie gala to benefit the Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, will take place on Friday, June 17, 2011 on the hospital grounds near the landmark Carillon tower.

Proceeds from the event will help to build a new and much larger emergency department in the hospital’s new patient pavilion to accommodate growing demand for pediatric emergency care in the area.

The hospital, which originally cared for children with orthopedic conditions, expanded both its facilities and services in the 1980s. After a small urgent care center was outgrown, a dedicated emergency department (ED) opened in the early 1990s. The ED has experienced an average 5.6% growth annually. In 2010, the ED recorded 45,600 visits, an average of nearly 125 a day. To accommodate this rapid growth, the ED in the new patient pavilion will expand from 29 to 44 beds and include FastTrack and observation areas, as well as two trauma rooms to support the hospital’s status as Delaware’s only pediatric trauma center. The expanded ED will have easy access to a new roof-top helipad, medical imaging, operating rooms and the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU).

A Night at Nemours will feature Aditi Roy, anchor and reporter for NBC-10 TV in Philadelphia, as honorary chairperson. Ms. Roy, an honors graduate of the University of California – Berkeley, holds a master’s degree in political science from Stanford University and a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University. She has been nominated for multiple regional Emmy Awards and frequently appears on “Best of Philly” lists for broadcast journalism.

The event’s dinner will be catered by the Wilmington Club. Guests will dance to the dynamic music of The Eturnity Band, a New York-based group that has played at events for President Clinton, Bill Gates, Steven Spielberg and other celebrities. In previous years, the event has raised funds to support the newborn intensive care unit (NICU), Nemours Center for Childhood Cancer Research, Nemours Cardiac Center, and the pediatric trauma program.
