Asthma Researcher Honored with Lifetime Achievement Award

Wednesday, May 1, 2013

Dr. John Lima

In recognition of his dedication to pediatric asthma research, Dr. John Lima was recently honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the American Lung Association of Northeast Florida.

As a Principle Research Scientist and Director of the Center for Pharmacogenomics and Translational Research at Nemours Children’s Specialty Care, Jacksonville, Dr. Lima began focusing on pediatric asthma research in 1998 and serves as Principal Investigator of the American Lung Association’s Asthma Clinical Research Center (ACRC), one of 18 centers throughout the nation.

The American Lung Association ACRC Network is the nation's largest not-for-profit network of clinical research centers dedicated to asthma treatment research, attracting some of the best asthma investigators worldwide. The ACRC Network conducts large clinical trials that will have a direct impact on patient care and asthma treatment. Since its inception in 1999, the network has contributed crucial knowledge in the quest to help people with asthma. The ALA recently rated the ACRC at Nemours, led by Dr. Lima, as the top center in the network.

Dr. Lima and his team are examining how genetic variation affects patient response to drugs used to treat asthma. The long-range goal of Dr. Lima’s research is to personalize asthma treatment using the patient’s individual genetic make-up.

“We’re riding the crest of research breakthroughs that will affect how we treat not only asthma but other complex chronic diseases like diabetes, obesity, hypertension, and many others,” said Dr. Lima.

Dr. Lima serves as a mentor to other Nemours researchers and is an active American Lung Association volunteer as a member of the American Lung Association’s Northeast Florida Leadership Board.
