Jacksonville Pediatrician Honored for Lifetime Achievement

Monday, Jul 16, 2012

A man who has been helping children in Florida since 1951 was recently honored by Nemours Fund for Children’s Health. The event recognized Richard G. Skinner, Jr., MD’s, lifetime commitment to serving the children of Northeast Florida.

Long-time friend and 30-year partner in practice, Al Bowers, MD, describes Dr. Skinner as “a pioneer and innovator in pediatrics” for his work identifying and treating early childhood learning disabilities.

In the mid-60s, Dr. Skinner saw the need for a formal and concentrated effort to address dyslexia, a health topic not widely recognized at that time. As a result, he created a supplemental school for children who needed the specialized education.

To recognize Dr. Skinner’s outstanding accomplishments, Nemours is establishing a fund in his honor to benefit Nemours BrightStart!, a program that supports early identification and treatment for young children at risk for dyslexia. Dyslexia occurs in 15 to 20 percent of the population and affects all aspects of a child’s development, making it a major child health issue.

Dr. Skinner led a long, distinguished career in pediatric healthcare in Northeast Florida. He served as the Chief of Pediatrics of Hope Haven Hospital (which later became Nemours Children’s Clinic) for 15 years and was a private practice pediatrician for 30 years, among his other accomplishments.

“Without Dr. Skinner’s leadership and foresight, Nemours Children’s Clinic would likely not exist in Jacksonville. This means that thousands of children over the years would not have had access to the high-quality specialty care that Nemours provides in a location close to their home,” said Chip Cover, Administrator, Nemours Children’s Specialty Care, Jacksonville. “We are thankful for the guidance that Dr. Skinner has provided to Nemours over the years and the passion for children that he has demonstrated.”
