Nemours Wins Innovation in Patient Care Award

Friday, Oct 9, 2015

Team of Paramedics, known as the Boo-Boo Care Team, Honored for Unique Program in Hospital Emergency Department

A program that shortens time in the emergency department and wins rave reviews from families was honored by the Florida Hospital Association at their annual conference on Thursday night. The Boo-Boo Care Team is made up of specially-trained paramedics who stitch up children’s wounds in the Nemours Children’s Hospital Emergency Department. The team won the Innovation in Patient Care award, which recognizes new approaches to care delivery.

"In many hospitals, only physicians suture wounds. At Nemours, the Boo-Boo Care Team sees and treats children faster, allowing more personalized care from the moment a family walks through our doors," said Todd Glass MD, emergency medicine division chief at Nemours Children’s Hospital. "Our post-care surveys show that parents are extremely satisfied with the experience and would recommend the program to other families and friends".

The paramedics are trained for six months on how to repair lacerations, treat nail-bed injuries and remove foreign bodies in soft tissue. The team always operates under the supervision of pediatric emergency medicine physicians.

Since the program was launched in the summer of 2014, the total length of stay for patients needing a suture has been reduced a full hour per patient. In addition, the average time each child has to wait to receive topical anesthetic has decreased by 30 minutes. Families have provided an average satisfaction score of 4.8 on a scale of 5.

The Florida Hospital Association (FHA) is the voice of Florida's hospital community. Through representation and advocacy, education and informational services, the FHA supports the mission of its members to provide the highest quality of care to the patients served.

The 2015 FHA annual meeting took place in Orlando from October 7-9 at the Hyatt Regency Grand Cyress. The Celebration of Service Awards celebrates health care leaders and organizations that are committed to the mission of providing high-quality care to Floridians.
