Nemours Children's Hospital Honored for Leadership in Patient Safety

Tuesday, Oct 22, 2013

A high-tech hub found in the heart of Nemours Children’s Hospital won an award from the Florida Hospital Association (FHA) last Thursday night. The Nemours Clinical Logistics Center received the FHA’s Leadership in Quality and Patient Safety Award at the Celebration of Achievement ceremony.

Located inside Nemours Children’s Hospital, the Clinical Logistics Center (CLC) is staffed by a trained medical professional who remotely tracks the vitals and alarms of each inpatient child 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The CLC’s medical staffers stay in constant contact with the hospital care teams and act as an additional set of eyes and ears, even when the nurse is away from the bedside. As a result, patients who are at the greatest risk are able to be monitored every second of the day.

The center also integrates data from Nemours’ sophisticated electronic health record (EHR) — looking at information such as the patient’s recent lab work, medical history, specialty clinic reports and more to help determine which patients need the most significant level of monitoring. The team may also confirm the timely administration of medication and assure that, at critical decision times, the care team uses evidence-based clinical protocols.

If the logistics center team detects signs of patient distress, they have the ability to make instant contact with the child and family in the room. With permission, the CLC can also use a high-definition camera installed in each patient room to get a visual of the child. When necessary, the rapid response team can be instantly dispatched.

“The Clinical Logistics Center at Nemours Children’s Hospital is a patient safety tool that is unparalleled in health care,” said Dr. Stephen Lawless, vice president of Quality and Safety for Nemours. “Nemours works hard to provide the very safest care to every child we treat. We are so proud to be recognized by the Florida Hospital Association for that effort.”

In December 2012, the other hospital operated by Nemours, the Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, was listed in the Leapfrog Group’s annual list of top hospitals. The Leapfrog Hospital Recognition Program uses standards from the Leapfrog Hospital Survey to calculate an overall quality score for each children’s hospital. Nemours Children’s Hospital, which celebrated its opening in Orlando’s Lake Nona Medical City a year ago on October 22, shares the same commitment to quality and safety, and follows the same high standards for delivering care.

The awards ceremony was held during the FHA annual meeting on October 17 at the Hilton Orlando Bonnet Creek.
