Get to Know Me
Sumathi Sundar, MD, is a board-certified pediatrician. She is passionate about disease prevention through simple behavior changes like hand washing.
Why I Treat Children
I love kids. I can’t imagine working with anyone other than children. Kids are very genuine. I like to get to know each one, and talk with them. I like to see the interaction kids have with their families. The other reason I treat children is that when kids get sick, they can get really sick. But when they start get a little better, they immediately bounce back.
What I'm Passionate About
I am passionate about treating a lot of conditions that are seen frequently in children —asthma is a major one. I like to educate parents about the condition, and how to manage it, so they understand that kids can be outside and playing. As a physician, I like to focus on prevention. Many illnesses these days can be prevented through things such as hand washing or changes to a child’s environment.
Make A Difference
I always listen to parents. You can learn the most about every child from the parents. I have picked up on rare medical conditions by listening to parents.I also try to get children to talk to their parents, especially as they get into the teen years. I have two teenagers myself, so I’ve gone through what some of those parents are going through. I’ve found that a lot of parenting experience comes just comes from practical knowledge, not books. Being a parent helps me be a better pediatrician.I try to address my patients’ needs and issues. I like continuity of care, so I follow up on my patients. I take them home with me — figuratively speaking — meaning that I think about them once I drive away from the office at night, I check on test results, I worry, I call the office, I call parents. I’m responsible for my patients. I take my job very seriously.
