Research Scientist
Anil Gopala, Ph.D. is Research Scientist and head the Cancer Stem Cell Laboratory at Nemours Center for Childhood Cancer Research. Anil obtained his Ph.D. in molecular biology and biochemistry from Indian Institute of Science, India. As a postdoctoral fellow in tumor biology at the University of California, Los Angeles, Anil's work focused on identifying the role of prostate specific membrane antigen in prostate cancer progression. His work was funded by the Postdoctoral Traineeship Award from Department of Defense. Before being part of Nemours, Anil headed a laboratory focusing on identifying regulators of glucose transporter, GLUT4, and their genetic association with type II diabetes. His laboratory identified STRA6 (stimulated by retinoic acid receptor 6) gene as a novel regulator of glucose metabolism on the basis of its genetic association with type 2 diabetes in Indian population. His team also identified several natural products such as gallic and ellagic acid as glucose uptake stimulators in adipocytes and muscle cells. Anil's research was supported by various RO1 equivalent extramural public funding. Dr. Anil's current focus is on understanding the biology of pediatric Acute myeloid leukemia in general and specifically interested in those seen among down syndrome children (DS-AML). He uses a combination of induced pluripotent stem cells and CRISPR/Cas9 technologies to model the various subtypes of DS-AML and also develop several patient derived xenograft models. These models will be used for preclinical testing and study the initiation and progression of the leukemia. His lab also focuses on understanding role of cancer stem cells in engineering the niche for the favorable existence of cancer cells. His Lab is currently supported by Moseley foundation and several other intra and extramural funding.
