Division of Developmental Medicine
About Our Division
The Division of Developmental Pediatrics at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Del., provides diagnostic evaluation, treatment plans and therapy for infants, preschoolers and school-age children, who may have a wide variety of developmental or behavioral problems. Our emphasis is on the evaluation of the child from infancy to age 6, but older children may be accepted as well.
We provide excellent care that places the patient and family at the center, and we believe that communication is central to the process. We strive to treat every child as we would our own and to bring peace of mind to patients and their families.
About Our Team
Our developmental pediatricians are fellowship trained in general pediatrics, neuro-developmental disabilities and developmental and behavioral medicine. We evaluate neurologic, genetic and general medical factors affecting children’s development. In addition, our medical staff screens children for age-appropriate developmental levels and psychosocial factors that may contribute to the presenting problem. The medical staff may recommend further, in-depth multidisciplinary evaluation, if indicated.
Our caregivers use an integrated medical record that unifies patient care across specialties and locations and prompts caregivers to consider best practices gained from Nemours' experience and academic literature. We also emphasize primary physician involvement in patient’s long-term care and work closely with the Divisions of Neurology, Behavioral Health and Rehabilitation Medicine.
Treatment
Recommended treatment may include:
- supportive counseling and anticipatory guidance
- medical treatment of specific developmental problems
- follow-up monitoring of developmental progress
A trans-disciplinary feeding and swallowing disorders program is also uniquely able to evaluate children with dysphagia.

Division of Diagnostic Referral
About Our Division
The Nemours Diagnostic Referral Service is a hospital-based general pediatric practice available for the evaluation and treatment of children. Our emphasis is on difficult diagnoses and the coordination of services for children with multiple complex medical issues. We also participate in providing pre- and post-operative care for children undergoing liver transplants.
Our specialists see patients referred from primary care doctors, the Emergency Department and other subspecialty areas. Each evaluation generally includes an initial detailed assessment as well as laboratory and imaging studies, if necessary. All findings and recommendations will be communicated to the child’s primary care physician or referring doctor. If the child would benefit from the expertise of additional Nemours subspecialists, we will make that referral as well.

Division of Transition of Care
About Our Division
By their 21st birthday, all patients treated at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Del., must transition to adult health care. Since there are many transitions that occur between the ages of 18 and 25, families often aren't adequately prepared.
Our Transition of Care program is a clinical consultation service designed to help teenage and young adult patients (particularly those with special health care needs) and their families transition as smoothly as possible from pediatrics into adult health care. We address both the medical and non-medical issues during transition (educational, vocational, legal guardianship, residential options, etc.).
Our Patients
Ideally, patients over the age of 14 with special health care needs will develop transition plans with their providers and parents. The patients who typically benefit most from working with our Transition of Care team are kids who:
- see multiple subspecialists in pediatrics and, therefore, may have a complicated transition
- have disabilities that will make it difficult to be completely independent as adults
Our Staff
A pediatrician and social work coordinator run our Transition of Care program. Together, we work with young adults and their families to create transition plans. To gauge progress, we meet with the family and child on a regular basis.
Patient Education
Transitioning care involves a lot of preparation and is a process, not just a transfer. A great place to start is by finding ways to increase independence or co-manage medical issues. To assist teens in beginning the process of developing a transition of care plan with their providers and parents, we help:
- identify adult health care providers who are knowledgeable about the child’s medical condition and with whom the family/child are comfortable
- kids learn more about their medical conditions
- teens and young adults manage their own care and become advocates of their own health (e.g., how to refill prescriptions and talk to adult providers)
- families work with insurance providers
- kids and their families learn about residential options, especially for patients who have disabilities that don’t allow them to function completely independently
