Frequently Asked Questions

Nemours International Medicine Adoption Program
Do you coordinate international adoptions?

No, we are not an adoption agency. But we support the adoption agencies who do international adoptions by providing adopting families specialized medical evaluations and follow-up care.

Are there specific countries for which you provide evaluations for international adoption?

We see children from countries all over the world and we can provide evaluations based on known issues in a specific geography.

What can I expect to receive regarding health information for international adoptions?

Evaluating the health status of a child in another country is challenging, but we’re here to help. The requirements and laws vary by country, but here’s what you should consider when it comes to adopting a child internationally:

  • you’re entitled to information about the health of any child you may adopt
  • we may be limited on what we can do based on the information that is received from the host country
  • you are entitled to unbiased medical advice
  • if there’s something you don't understand, don’t hesitate to ask
What are the most common conditions you see with international adoptions?

Some of the most frequent medical care needs in international adoptions are listed below. Visit to read articles related to specific conditions, such as:

  • clubfoot
  • cleft lip and palate
  • hepatitis
  • heart problems
  • hearing loss
  • malnutrition
  • post-traumatic stress disorder
  • HIV infection
  • tuberculosis
  • sleep problems
  • attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
Do you also provide adoption medicine for domestic adoptions (children adopted within the United States)?

Our international adoption program is intended for newly adopted children from outside the United States. We don’t provide evaluations for domestic adoptions through this program, at this time.

What if I adopt an older child?

Our program serves adoptive children from newborn through 18 years of age.
