Our Nemours Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders (NCCBD) isn’t a single “place.” It’s a community-based program with a specialized team that pools expertise across four core locations, all of which are members of the Children’s Oncology Group (COG).

By crossing geographic boundaries, Nemours can offer:
  • resources, education and information throughout your child’s cancer journey
  • a weekly “tumor board,” where pediatric oncologists and other specialists gather to discuss complex cancer cases
  • the largest number of clinical trials in the region
  • blood and bone marrow transplants with special environments where kids can be kids

As a National Cancer Institute Community Oncology Research Program (NCORP), Nemours can offer the institute’s most advanced treatments to children. The National Cancer Institute has designated only two pediatric research programs in the United States as having reached NCORP status. Other highlights of our cancer care include:

  • an infusion center that features private rooms, in-room TV and GetWellNetwork
  • therapies to help children feel better emotionally and physically
  • certified nurse care coordinators to help guide you
  • Child Life specialists to help your child cope
  • a physician hotline, so you’ll be able to reach your Nemours specialists day or night

At Nemours, we’re at the forefront of using minimally invasive pediatric procedures. In this way, we can help minimize your child’s discomfort, enhance healing and reduce the length of time in the hospital. These advanced techniques also help reduce risk and infection rates.
Conditions that previously required open surgery can now be treated by Nemours pediatric interventional radiologists. Interventional radiology is both a clinical and procedural branch of imaging.

Our highly trained team of experts uses image-guided techniques to diagnose and treat diseases in nearly every organ system. An imaging technique — typically ultrasound, CAT scan or fluoroscopy — is used to produce a real-time image that helps precisely guide the pediatric interventional radiologist in performing procedures such as:

  • inserting long IV lines (called PICCs, ports, dialysis catheters and central lines)
  • draining an abscess (infection) in the abdomen or almost any other area
  • placing a gastrostomy tube (feeding tube)
  • performing a biopsy (precisely sampling a tumor or organ)
  • treating vascular malformations and tumors, including venous malformations, lymphatic malformations, arteriovenous malformations and certain types of hemangiomas (abnormal buildups of blood vessels in the skin or internal organs)
