Emergency Department Visits

For information, call (407) 567-4000
Note: For general information only (medical information cannot be provided) — this is not a 911 line.

When kids are hurt or sick, especially young children and infants, it takes specially trained, experienced pediatric emergency medicine specialists who know what to look for — and who understand how to care for kids’ medical and emotional needs.

Every physician in our Emergency Department (ED) is board-certified in pediatric medicine. And most kids are seen by a doctor within 10 minutes of arrival.

From Minor Mishaps to Major Injury and Illness

The Emergency Department at Nemours Children's Hospital (NCH) is fully equipped to handle all kinds of pediatric emergencies — from broken bones to ear infections to medically complex injuries or illnesses — in children from birth to age 18. And unlike a general emergency department, pediatric care is all we do.

Children Seen in Minutes, Not Hours, for Quicker Care

At NCH, we deliver emergency care differently. From the moment you arrive, our goal is to get your child in a room and assessed by our highly experienced pediatric emergency team as soon as possible — with no waiting.

Our rapid intake also includes:

  • timely assignment to a private exam room with walls, not curtains
  • registration at bedside
  • comprehensive onsite pediatric radiology services
    (X-rays, MRIs, CAT scans)
  • 24-hour access to world-class pediatric specialists and surgeons
  • physicians who are all board-certified in pediatric medicine

What You Can Expect

Our ED was designed in partnership with our Family Advisory Council to be child- and family-friendly. And most kids are seen by a doctor within 10 minutes of arrival.

It includes features such as:
  • convenient patient parking right next to the ED
  • spacious rooms that accommodate patients and families
  • playroom/lounge area for families awaiting tests or procedures
  • social workers who can help you find resources, transport and more
  • Child Life specialists who use play activities and other therapies to help minimize the stress of your child's visit
When You Arrive

A pediatric nurse will greet you and assess your child's condition, quickly deciding whether you need immediate emergency services or care for acute, non-life-threatening injuries or illnesses.

Patients are then taken back to a private room where you'll complete the necessary paperwork (insurance confirmation, Consent for Treatment, HIPAA Privacy forms, etc.). Please let us know whether your primary care physician referred you to the ED and if you need interpreter services.

Prior to the Exam

If you're hungry or thirsty, vending machines and a café are nearby. Just be sure to ask the nurse before giving your child anything to eat or drink because it may interfere with necessary testing or procedures.

In the Exam Room

Your pediatric emergency physician will evaluate your child's needs and order appropriate tests and treatments. You can also request to see a Child Life specialist who can answer your questions, provide support and offer appropriate play activities to help your child overcome anxiety.

To pass the time, we have the GetWellNetwork, which features kid-friendly entertainment and interactive videos illustrating certain tests and procedures. While you're in the exam room, feel free to use your mobile phone, laptop or other electronic device — but not during registration and the examination. Learn More About the GetWellNetwork »

If Your Child Needs Tests

We have comprehensive onsite pediatric radiology services in the Emergency Department (ED), which allows us to perform X-rays or other imaging tests (like CAT scans or MRIs) quickly and efficiently. A number of rapid lab tests can also be performed in the ED, while others are sent to our main laboratory. And we have access to specialist consultations with physicians in all pediatric medical and surgical subspecialties, if and when we need it.

After Your Visit

After your exam and appropriate treatment, we'll discharge your child. A pediatric team member will make a follow-up call within 24 hours after your child is discharged. Your primary care or referring physician will be continuously updated through our electronic health record system, by phone and/or by fax.

If an overnight stay is needed, your child will be admitted to the hospital and moved into an inpatient room.

Changing the Way We Reach Kids With Special Health Care Needs

Children with an autism spectrum disorder, behavioral condition or developmental delays do better with compassionate caregivers and calm spaces. That’s why we developed REACH (Respecting Each Awesome Child Here) — an emergency care model that adapts to every child’s needs for the best possible outcomes.

The program provides:

  • staff trained to listen and understand your child’s condition
  • a separate waiting room if needed
  • calm, low stimulation environment
  • onsite tools and resources to help your child cope
  • treatment that focuses on your child’s specific needs and comfort

Kids Everywhere Can Benefit

REACH is a first-of-its-kind program created by a Nemours nurse practitioner and Child Life specialist who also share best practices with Emergency Departments across the country. To learn more, or to make a comment or suggestion, email us at:
