Our Surgical Care

Whatever type of procedure your child might need, we'll make sure your child is comfortable before, during and after surgery. At NCH, you can even accompany your child into the operating room, which lets you provide comfort until anesthesia is given.

Types of Surgeries at Nemours Children's Hospital

Nemours Children's Hospital brings new expertise in pediatric surgery to Central Florida. Our facility has eight operating rooms dedicated to performing surgeries for nearly every condition, including minimally invasive procedures. Our No. 1 goal is to use the least invasive surgical procedure available so kids can get back to being kids, sooner — with less pain and discomfort.

General Surgery (Endoscopy or Laparoscopy)
  • reflux disease
  • appendicitis
  • gallstones (cholecystectomy)
  • hernias
  • inflammatory bowel disease (proctocolectomy, intestinal resection)
  • cleft & craniofacial anomalies
  • complex hydrocephalus (fluid in the brain)
  • Chiari malformations (structural abnormalities in the brain)
  • spinal/brain tumors
  • craniosynostosis (early closure of an infant’s skull)
  • tethered spinal cord
Thoracic Surgery (Thoracoscopy)
  • chest wall deformities (using Nuss, Ravitch and non-operative approaches like bracing, using braces customized onsite at NCH)
  • iaphragmatic hernias (a hole in the diaphragm)
  • tracheoesophageal fistulas (a connection between the esophagus and the trachea)
Easing Fears and Concerns About Surgery

Our pediatric surgical specialists (surgeons, anesthesiologists and nurses) understand what kids and families need — psychologically and physically.

Because we truly believe in family-centered care, we invite you (one parent or guardian) to the operating room to be with your child until just after sedation. We also provide our families with a peaceful place to wait (without leaving the surgical floor) in our surgical commons area and beautiful rooftop garden.

The best way to prepare for any surgery, whether it's a routine outpatient procedure or a complex operation requiring an overnight hospital stay, is to be open and honest with your child. Kids of all ages cope better when they have a clear idea about what’s happening and why — and how they might feel before, during and after the procedure.

So take time to:
  • Help your child understand the condition or physical problem that requires surgery.
  • Familiarize your child with the necessary medical procedure(s).
  • Give your child a "step-by-step" list about what to expect from the time you arrive, to well after the surgical procedure.
  • Talk about how your child may feel before, during and after the surgery.

At Nemours Children's Hospital, our philosophy of holistic, child- and family-centered care means that pediatric hospitalists, Child Life specialists, nutritionists, educators and social workers will also play important roles in your child’s healing process.
