Easing Fears & Concerns

The best way to prepare for any surgery, whether it’s a routine outpatient procedure or a complex operation requiring an overnight hospital stay, is to be open and honest with your child. Kids of all ages cope better when they have a concrete idea about what’s happening and why, and how they might feel before, during and after the procedure. Take time to:
- Help your child understand the condition or physical problem that requires surgery.
- Familiarize your child with the necessary medical procedure(s).
- Give your child a “step-by-step” about what to expect from the time you arrive, to well after the surgical procedure.
- Talk about how your child may feel before, during and after the surgery.
