Fetal Cardiac Evaluations

If you’re pregnant and your doctor suspects your baby may have a possible heart problem, we offer fetal diagnostic cardiology services and consultations for expectant parents. As early as the 18th week of the pregnancy, we can perform fetal echocardiography (fetal “echo”) — an in-depth cardiac ultrasound study that allows us to view the structure, function and rhythm of your baby’s heart while still in the womb.

If we detect a problem, we’ll help you understand your baby’s condition, coordinate consultations with one of our pediatric cardiologists and plan for any necessary treatment at, or soon after, the birth.

Sports Physicals: Focusing on Heart Health

Sports are a great way for to kids to maintain health and physical fitness, but overexertion can stress the heart and worsen an undetected heart condition. At Nemours Children’s Specialty Care, Lakeland, our trained pediatric cardiology specialists provide comprehensive heart evaluations for athletes before they hit the track, field or court — helping to ensure safe game play.

Sports Evaluations: What to Expect

Our pediatric sports evaluations generally include:

  • a thorough medical review
  • complete cardiovascular physical exam
  • electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG)

Depending on your child’s symptoms or condition, your pediatric cardiologist may also order cardiovascular imaging (echocardiogram, MRI, CT, etc.), cardiac event monitoring or lab tests.
