Safety and Outcomes

To help ensure newborns and kids receive the best and safest cardiac treatment possible, the Nemours Cardiac Center in Florida has created a program that includes experienced care teams, advanced technology and patient-family input.

The surgical experts based at Nemours Children’s Hospital includes leaders in pediatric cardiology and anesthesiology. These leaders have extensive experience and a demonstrated commitment to quality and patient safety having come from nationally recognized pediatric heart programs such as Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh (Peter Wearden, MD) Johns Hopkins (Gul Dadlani, MD), the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin (Steven Lichtenstein, MD) and Cedars-Sinai (Constantinos Chrysostomou, MD).

How We Measure and Report

To advance safety and the quality of care across the nation, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) tracks the outcomes of pediatric heart surgery in a nationwide database. Nemours serves as a volunteer participant in this outcomes reporting, in order to help build knowledge about pediatric heart surgery so more kids can thrive in spite of challenges related to heart health.

And thanks to continuing advances in heart surgery, treatments that used to be highly invasive can now be delivered in a minimally invasive way, and often using safer procedures that lead to better outcomes. Additionally, conditions that used to be life-limiting can now be corrected in many cases.
