To ask a question about our neonatology care, please call us at (302) 651-4000. We promise to do whatever it takes to treat your baby as we would our own.
At Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, we offer comprehensive, compassionate, around-the-clock newborn care in our technologically advanced Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Providing the highest level of care for critically ill newborns, we are the only Level IV NICU in the state of Delaware.
Here for you and your little one right from the very start, our NICU environment truly recognizes the important role you play in the care and healing process of your baby.
When your newborn comes to duPont Hospital for Children, you can rest assured that you’re getting high-quality care (24 hours a day, seven days a week) from a whole team of newborn medicine experts, including:
- neonatologists who are specifically trained and board-certified in both Pediatrics and Neonatology
- neonatal nurse practitioners
- specialty fellows
- registered nurses
- dedicated NICU social worker
- other pediatric subspecialists
Together, we care for newborns with a wide variety of medical and surgical conditions.
Through the Nemours Partners for Perinatal Management program, we also work with expectant parents and their doctors to help diagnose congenital conditions and develop a plan of care for after your baby is born. That way, if you know your baby might need care from our neonatologists or other specialists after birth, you’ll be prepared ahead of time.
What To Expect At Our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
As Delaware's only Level IV NICU, we provide care for the most critically ill infants, with onsite cardiothoracic surgery and the state's only neonatal extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) center.
We provide services to ventilator-dependent infants, including a comprehensive teaching program for parents about tracheostomy (a plastic tube inserted directly into the trachea) and ventilators (machines that help babies breathe).
All types of support services also are readily available, including:
- Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO, for short) — a technique in intensive care medicine used to give babies external cardiac and respiratory support oxygen
- respiratory therapy
- physical therapy
- laboratory services
- feeding therapy
- hearing assessments
- EEG (brain activity monitoring)
- EKG (heart monitoring)
- social work
If your newborn needs to be transported from other hospitals to our NICU, our specialized Nemours Critical Care Transport team provides children throughout the region with safe, urgent transfer. And we use our own ambulances and helicopters that are specially prepared for pediatric patients in need of intensive care.
Completely redesigned in 2008, our NICU is a model of family-centered care. You can remain with your baby in comfort in one of our family-friendly rooms (most of which are private, single-patient rooms). Amenities include a sleeper sofa, recliner, telephone, data port and flat-screen TV. Sound-absorbent flooring and soft lighting also help to provide a calm, restful environment for you and your baby. In our NICU waiting room, parents can also use the dining area, bathroom and shower facilities.
Along with expert neonatology care, one of the things parents appreciate most is our location at duPont Hospital for Children — with our beautiful, park-like setting of huge oaks and inviting green lawns. You’ll also find:
- free underground parking
- playground and kid-friendly waiting areas for siblings
- little red wagons (available for escorting your young children)
- gift shop
- safety store
- bagel shop and cafeteria
- on-site pharmacy
- nondenominational chapel
- Healing Touch rooftop garden
- Family Resource Center and Ronald McDonald Family Room (with a kitchenette, computers, fax machine, copier, printers, free Internet access and wireless service, library, shower facilities and quiet sleep rooms)
No matter how long your baby's stay, please know that we’ll help make your family's experience as easy and stress-free as possible.
