Our pulmonary specialists (lung and respiratory care doctors known as pulmonologists) treat infants, children and teens with diseases of the lungs and airways in family-friendly outpatient and inpatient environments. And because these diseases can affect other parts of the body, we work closely with specialists across Nemours. Together, our teams are dedicated to giving each child comprehensive and convenient care.

Our pulmonary specialists evaluate and care for children with conditions such as:
  • airway obstruction
  • apnea (brief pauses in breathing, usually during sleep)
  • asthma (a lung condition that causes difficulty breathing)
  • bronchopulmonary dysplasia (inflammation and scarring in the lungs that develops in premature babies after being on a ventilator for a prolonged period of time)
  • cystic fibrosis (a chronic genetic disorder that leads to excess mucus in the lungs along with other findings)
  • chronic cough
  • muscular dystrophy
  • recurrent pneumonia (lung infection)
  • sleep-related breathing problems
  • ventilator dependence
  • tracheostomy (a surgical procedure that creates an opening in the windpipe when breathing is obstructed)
  • tuberculosis (a specific type of bacterial infection of the lungs)
  • RSV (respiratory syncytial virus), a virus that is particularly dangerous to premature babies

Nemours’ Pediatric Asthma Expertise

Next door at Wolfson Children’s Hospital, Nemours directs Jacksonville’s only comprehensive pediatric asthma care program developed by pulmonary and allergy/immunology specialists. The program is dedicated to providing advanced asthma care and educating children, families and the community about the disease. Our asthma care team also partners with other Jacksonville area hospitals to develop standardized, inpatient care for kids with asthma.

Sickle Cell/Pulmonology Clinic for Children

We are also pleased to offer a combined sickle cell/pulmonology clinic. A common complication for children with sickle cell anemia is breathing trouble due to asthma, pneumonia, pulmonary hypertension or other problems. The doctors in the divisions of hematology/oncology and pulmonology have come together to form a multidisciplinary clinic (coordinated care team) to provide one-stop care for children with sickle cell anemia and chronic breathing problems.

Pediatric Cystic Fibrosis Program at Nemours

The Cystic Fibrosis Care Center at Nemours Children’s Specialty Care, Jacksonville is nationally accredited by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, which means we’re actively involved in helping children from birth to 18 live long, healthy lives. We offer ongoing care that addresses the whole child and family by enhancing patient education, improving nutrition and diet, participating in a national registry that allows researchers to study drug effectiveness and more.
