Our board-certified pediatric pulmonary specialists and sleep medicine professionals at Nemours Children’s Hospital evaluate, diagnose, treat and provide long-term management for infants, children and teenagers with a variety of lung and airway diseases and sleep disorders.
In addition to seeing children on an inpatient and outpatient basis at the hospital, our doctors regularly see patients at our satellite specialty care locations in downtown Orlando, Lake Mary and Melbourne, Fla.
We offer a variety of services, many unique to Central Florida, to help children throughout the region (and their families) breathe and sleep easier.
We evaluate and diagnose children with respiratory disorders using cutting-edge technology. Our laboratory includes basic lung function testing, full exercise testing and bronchial challenges.
We offer expert multidisciplinary cystic fibrosis (CF) treatment in a family-oriented environment. Our program is Central Florida’s only nationally accredited Cystic Fibrosis Center, and one of only 110 accredited CF centers nationwide. We follow the national guidelines for care and we have seen a consistent upward climb in our patients’ overall lung function. Nemours also participates in the CF transparency program, sponsored by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. This database of health-related information has led to better practices and health outcomes for CF patients.
Children with asthma require expert, ongoing care especially in Central Florida where asthma rates are higher than the national average. At Nemours Children’s Hospital, our Center for Asthma Research & Treatment (CART) helps kids with asthma (in mild and most severe forms) get the diagnosis they need to start treatment — and advance the science of asthma care so that children everywhere can have better outcomes. Nemours continues to set the standard for asthma care with ongoing and NIH-funded asthma research and clinical trials aimed at helping children with asthma breathe easier.
Many children with respiratory problems, especially asthma, inhale their medications in aerosol form — fine particles of medicine suspended in air or some other gas. Sometimes the nebulizers and inhalers they use to inhale these medications don’t work properly — because the medication particles are too large to get into the child’s lungs.
Researchers in our aerosol laboratory study how to get more of the medicines where they’ll do the most good: in the lungs. By determining the right amount and size of particles that are needed, and finding ways to get the particles from their container into the lungs, our respiratory technicians help children derive the most benefit from every dose of medication.
We offer Central Florida’s only comprehensive RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) program. RSV affects the upper airway and lungs and can be serious in young babies and children with other medical problems. Our program is aimed at preventing the virus in premature babies.
Children and teens throughout Central Florida with sickle cell disease are cared for by our experienced specialists at the Nemours Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders (NCCBD) — a center dedicated to providing expert and compassionate care to children with cancer and blood disorders. Using the latest advancements in treating sickle cell symptoms, our pediatric hematology experts also collaborate on research efforts at Nemours NCCBD locations in the Delaware Valley and throughout Florida.
Respiratory Therapy Services
Our pulmonary specialists and nurses work hand-in-hand with registered respiratory therapists and trained pediatric nurses to provide expertise, guidance and a variety of other services, including:
- supplying medical gases needed for treatment
- managing ventilator support
- administering aerosol medications
- performing lung function testing
- educating families about equipment provided for home use
The pediatric sleep medicine experts from Nemours Children’s Hospital are recognized as some of the nation’s best board-certified pulmonologists who evaluate and treat sleep disorders in children. In addition to working with highly skilled pediatric respiratory therapists and sleep technologists, we partner with other pediatric specialists such as otolaryngologists (ear, nose and throat, or “ENT”), neurologists, allergists and immunologists to give your child the healthy benefits of restful sleep.
Helping Children and Families Manage Chronic Pulmonary Conditions
No matter what your child’s condition, we recognize the importance of the family in the care and healing process. Because many of the children we see have chronic (long-term) illnesses that require repeated visits, our respiratory therapy team is committed to building strong relationships with families. We’re also committed to teaching our patients and their families about their condition and how best to manage it.
Through education, we can help improve your child’s quality of life and can often reduce the number of school days your child misses as well as the number of times he or she requires emergency hospital care.
Dealing with a chronic or complex medical condition is difficult for your child and family. But you don’t have to go it alone. Nemours Children’s Hospital provides an array of support services for your child and family. With a whole-child focus on health and healing, we provide many other family-centered services, including:
- nurse educators to teach you how to manage your child’s condition at home
- dietitians to provide nutritional recommendations
- social workers to help you cope with your child’s condition
- Child Life specialists to engage your child in therapeutic play and stress relief activities
- nondenominational pastoral care for spiritual support and guidance
If your child has a complex or chronic condition we encourage you to take advantage of KidsTRACK, a unique service of Nemours Children’s Hospital.
