Developmental Pediatrics

small developing child

There’s a wide range of what’s considered typical when it comes to child development. But if there’s something about your child’s physical, emotional, behavioral or social development that has you concerned, Nemours’ expert developmental pediatricians will evaluate what’s going on and if necessary, create a treatment plan specific to your child’s needs.

NOTE: In this medical specialty, we primarily focus on children under the age of 7 years old. We do have a limited number of appointments for older children and teens. Although appointments for young children are prioritized, please know that there can be a significant wait for appointments for children of any age — potentially six months or more. However, if cancellations occur, we do actively reach out to offer sooner appointments.

Read More About Developmental Pediatrics

Developmental pediatrics is a medical specialty that focuses on whole-child growth and development. Nemours’ developmental pediatricians are board-certified in pediatrics and have completed a fellowship in either neurodevelopmental disabilities or developmental and behavioral pediatrics.

Working together with a team of medical specialists (neurologists, geneticists, nutritionists, therapists and more), we help kids of all ages who have developmental delays, developmental disabilities or medical conditions that affect learning and behavior.

Our expertise covers a range of child development concerns, including:

  • suspected or known delays in motor, language or social skills
  • autistic spectrum disorders
  • learning disabilities
  • attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • developmental concerns associated with known congenital or genetic conditions, such as cerebral palsy or Down syndrome
  • pediatric feeding and swallowing disorders

Resources for Patients & Families

Our Central Florida developmental and behavioral pediatrics program helps parents and children identify and address the root causes of behavior problems — and apply successful solutions.

At Nemours, we support the development of life-long skills and habits, and we work with families, schools, community organizations and other health care providers to create individualized care for each child. Our care teams perform assessments for children younger than age 6, and evaluation and treatment for children up to age 18 for:

  • attention deficit and hyperactivity
  • anxiety
  • sleep problems
  • behavioral problems complicating chronic illnesses and conditions
