Neonatology (NICU)

Expert Intensive Care for Newborns

Parents visit their new baby in the NICU

Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) provide the best start in life for babies who are born too early or have medical problems. Our skilled teams of newborn medicine specialists (neonatologists) provide 24/7 care in high-tech facilities. Every year, our NICU care helps hundreds of babies grow strong enough to go home to their families.

Conditions We Treat

Conditions We Treat

We see a full spectrum of conditions — far too many to list here. The conditions we treat vary depending on the location and providers selected. Don’t see a condition listed? Call us.

  • airway abnormalities (problems that mean babies can’t breathe properly)
  • apnea
  • congenital diaphragmatic hernia (a hole in the diaphragm, the large muscle that separates the chest and belly and helps the lungs breathe in and out)
  • gastroschisis (when a baby’s stomach and intestines stick out through an opening at the side of the belly button)
  • intestinal atresias (when a part of the intestine doesn’t form properly or is too narrow)
  • meconium aspiration (when a newborn breathes in meconium — a baby's first feces, or poop — before, during or after labor and delivery)
  • metabolic disorders (problems with the body's cells converting food into energy)
  • myelomeningocele (better known as spina bifida, when the spine doesn’t fully close as a baby develops in the womb)
  • necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) (inflammation and cell damage in the colon, or large intestine, that mostly affects premature babies)
  • omphalocele (when some of the organs in a baby’s belly are in a sac outside the body)
  • pulmonary hypertension (high blood pressure in the blood vessels that go to a newborn’s lungs)
  • respiratory problems related to prematurity (when a baby’s lungs and airways don’t develop enough to breathe on their own)
  • seizure disorders (seizures due to errors in the brain’s electrical activity)
  • urogenital disorders (birth defects that affect the urinary tract or genitals)

We make sure you and your family are well taken care of too. We keep you involved every step of the way. Your care team will explain your little one’s diagnosis and treatment, discuss all the options, and invite you to help create the best treatment plan for your baby.
