Treating Kids’ Brains With Care

Pediatric neurosurgery expert standing back to back with a patient.

Our pediatric neurosurgery experts provide comprehensive treatment and care for children with nearly every childhood brain, skull, spinal cord and nervous system condition. Kids from across the world, from the tiniest newborns to the oldest teens, come to Nemours for our world-class skills and expertise. With state-of-the-art technologies and seasoned experience, we also can diagnose babies still in the womb, and provide a plan of care for after they’re born.

Conditions We Treat

Conditions We Treat

Using equipment sized specifically for children, Nemours neurosurgeons perform extremely advanced and precise pediatric procedures. To help kids heal better — and faster — we offer, whenever possible, minimally invasive surgical procedures (using small incisions and natural openings instead of large, open incisions).

We see a full spectrum of conditions — far too many to list here. The conditions we treat vary depending upon the location and providers selected. Don’t see a condition listed? Call us.

  • arachnoid cysts (fluid-filled sac inside the head or spine)
  • arteriovenous malformations (abnormal connection between arteries and veins)
  • brachial plexus injuries (to the spinal cord nerves that signal to the shoulder, arms and hands)
  • Chiari malformation (when brain tissue extends down into the spinal cord)
  • complex spinal conditions
  • concussions
  • congenital anomalies of the neck and back (birth defects)
  • craniofacial anomalies (facial and skull bone disorders)
  • craniosynostosis (skull bones fuse together before the brain has stopped growing) and other skull deformities
  • dural fistulas (abnormal connection between arteries and veins in the outer layer of the brain)
  • epilepsy (epilepsy surgery)
  • herniated discs (slipped or ruptured discs between the vertebrae)
  • hydrocephalus (increased spinal fluid in the ventricles of the brain)
  • idiopathic intracranial hypertension (increased spinal fluid pressure in the brain)
  • intracranial hemorrhage (bleeding inside the skull)
  • Moyamoya disease (blockage of the internal carotid arteries)
  • neurofibromatosis types I and II (nerve tissue tumors)
  • pituitary and pineal gland lesions (craniopharyngiomas, germ cell tumors)
  • positional plagiocephaly (flattened head)
  • scoliosis (spine curvature)
  • spasticity (muscle stiffness and/or involuntary movement)
  • spina bifida (neural tube defect of the spine) and myelomeningocele
  • spinal deformities, especially from skeletal dysplasia (dwarfism)
  • Sturge-Weber syndrome (marked by vascular birthmark and neurological abnormalities)
  • syringomyelia (cyst in the spinal cord)
  • tethered spinal cord (when the spinal cord is attached to the spinal column)
  • tuberous sclerosis (benign lesions of the nervous system)
  • tumors of the brain, skull, spinal cord, and spinal column
  • vascular malformations (blood vessel defects) of the head and neck
Why Choose Us

Why Choose Us

Using advanced procedures, our team of neurosurgeons works together with any other specialists your child might need to provide comprehensive, compassionate, family-centered care before, during and after surgery. Nemours neurosurgeons are also active in researching neurological conditions in children, and publishing in peer-reviewed medical journals. We’re always looking for improved ways to give kids the best possible care.

We offer full-service neurosurgical care, including the most advanced image-guided and minimally invasive neurosurgical procedures available to treat all types of pediatric neurological conditions, while preserving normal growth and development. Using a high-resolution camera on a small scope (called an “endoscope”), neuroendoscopy is one technique that allows us to precisely locate the area and use very tiny tools to fix many problems. That often means better accuracy, faster recovery time, less pain and risk for infection, and minimal scarring.

U.S. News & World Report Best Children’s Hospitals: Neurology & Neurosurgery

We offer pediatric neurosurgery care at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children (Wilmington, Del.) and select satellite Nemours duPont Pediatrics locations. We’re especially proud of our extensive imaging and navigational equipment, including the Katzin Diagnostic & Research PET/MR Center at duPont Hospital for Children. We’re able to pinpoint the origin of seizure activity in the brain using cutting-edge, brain-mapping imaging technology (positron emission tomography with magnetic resonance, or PET/MR). We’re the nation’s first pediatric hospital to use the PET/MR with a focus on brain disorders, particularly epilepsy. This helps as many as 90 percent of kids become seizure-free.

Our care also includes:

  • board-certified neurosurgeons frequently named among the Best Doctors in America®
  • general and specialized neurosurgery services with customized treatment plans
  • academic medical center for leading-edge care
  • fully-equipped pediatric neurosurgery operating rooms
  • complex hydrocephalus care (early treatment with endoscopic surgery; neurosurgeons who’s been a 20-plus-year member of the Hydrocephalus Association’s Medical Advisory Board)
  • extensive experience with the management of shunts (special tubes surgically implanted in the brain to help it drain fluid)
  • neurointerventional services with Christiana Care, providing care for arteriovenous malformations (an abnormal connection between an artery and a vein) and cerebral aneurysms (weakness in an artery wall)
  • intraventricular hemorrhage in prematurity care (when premature infants have bleeding in the brain), providing early treatment with endoscopic surgery
  • epilepsy surgery and skull base surgery in collaboration with Thomas Jefferson University (TJU) Hospital

We offer pediatric neurosurgical care at Nemours Children’s Hospital (Orlando) and select satellite Nemours Children’s Specialty Care locations.
