Radiology (Medical Imaging)

Top Quality, State-of-the-Art, Safe & Reliable Tests

Pediatric radiology physician examines imaging test results.

Radiology, or medical imaging, allows doctors to “see” the bones and organs by using a variety of noninvasive tests (when no instrument is inserted inside the body). At Nemours, we have one of the largest, most well-respected pediatric radiology departments in North America. Our team of experts is specially trained to work with kids, using pediatric radiology equipment that’s designed or adapted to meet your child’s needs. Our pediatric radiology teams are always looking out for your child’s safety and comfort during any kind of medical imaging test. And we make sure you and your doctor can get the answers you need when it matters most.

Services We Offer

Services We Offer

At Nemours, we’ve combined our pediatric radiology groups into one integrated system. That means your child can benefit from the experience of all of our board-certified pediatric radiologists. We can see and discuss your child’s scans anytime, anywhere, in an instant.

We offer many different types of imaging services — far too many to list here. And studies available differ by location and condition. Your doctor will order the most appropriate for your child. Don’t see a test listed? Call us.

  • bone densitometry (technology that measures bone density)
  • cardiac imaging (studies of the heart)
  • computed axial tomography (CAT or CT) scans (uses a special doughnut-shaped X-ray machine to provide cross-sectional views of a certain part of the body)
  • emergency imaging (a board-certified pediatric radiologist is available to read emergency imaging results 24/7)
  • EOS low-dose imaging (advanced, Nobel-Prize-winning X-ray technology for exams of the spine, hips, thighs, legs, ankles and feet — the radiation dose is up to 20 times less than a CT exam and up to 10 times less than a typical X-ray)
  • fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (performed while baby is still developing in the womb during pregnancy; shows a more detailed view than a regular prenatal ultrasound)
  • fluoroscopy (like a moving X-ray — used to view movement in a certain area of the body in real time)
  • functional neuroimaging (for viewing brain activity in real time)
  • interventional radiology (uses a real-time image to help precisely guide the pediatric interventional radiologist to the right place to diagnose or treat a condition — may prevent the need for open procedures or invasive surgery)
  • magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (large doughnut-shaped scanner with a tunnel in the center, for detailed images of internal organs and structures through the use of a magnetic field and sound waves instead of radiation)
  • musculoskeletal X-rays and imaging (CT, MRI and ultrasound) to look at muscles, bones and joints
  • neuroradiology (different kinds of imaging tests to look at the brain, head, skull or spine)
  • nuclear medicine (a small amount of a radioactive element, often delivered through an IV, gives off energy that can be detected by scanners and provide high-resolution images)
  • sedation services (medicine given, if needed, to help your child relax or become drowsy and still during an imaging procedure)
  • ultrasound (using sound waves to create images of internal structures of a certain part of your child’s body)
  • X-ray (uses a small amount of radiation to take pictures of your child’s bones and internal organs)
Why Choose Us

Why Choose Us

At Nemours, our team approach helps us achieve the most accurate results, while keeping your child as safe and comfortable as possible. Your child’s imaging team may include board-certified pediatric radiologists, certified technologists — all specifically trained in kid-friendly care — plus sedation specialists and Child Life specialists, who are experts in providing age-appropriate support to kids who may be scared or anxious.

Here are some other reasons families can trust us for their child’s imaging needs:

  • board-certified, fellowship-trained pediatric radiologists (available at Nemours hospitals and satellite practices)
  • dual fellowship training (some of our radiologists are among only a few hundred in the nation who are dual-fellowship-trained in both pediatric diagnostic and interventional radiology, or pediatric radiology and neuroradiology)
  • expert interpretation based on condition or body part (subspecialized pediatric radiologists interpret your child’s images, no matter which Nemours facility performed the exam)
  • fast results (radiologists available to consult with your child’s physicians 24/7, with report results available on average within an hour for routine exams, and within less than 20 minutes for emergency exams)
  • highly skilled technologists and techniques specifically designed for kids (to get the right images on the first try)
  • nationally and internationally recognized (for our knowledge and work to advance pediatric imaging techniques)
  • state-of-the-art low-dose imaging technology (advanced technology that provides better images with less radiation exposure)
  • strict safety processes (following guidelines set by Image Gently®, the leading voice in reducing childhood radiation exposure)
  • systemwide technology (radiologists can interpret images from any Nemours location)

We offer pediatric radiology services at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children (Wilmington, Del.) and select Nemours duPont Pediatrics satellite locations.

  • advanced imaging such as the Katzin Diagnostic & Research PET/MR Center — like two tests in one (PET and MRI), uses reduced levels of radiation to pinpoint the origin of seizure activity in the brain using cutting-edge, brain mapping imaging technology. We’re the nation’s first pediatric hospital to use the PET/MR with a focus on brain disorders, particularly epilepsy — helping as many as 90 percent of kids become seizure-free.
  • American College of Radiology (ACR) accreditation (the gold standard in medical imaging) for CT, MRI, ultrasound and PET MRI imaging (positron emission tomography with magnetic resonance, or PET/MR) — assures the highest level of image quality and safety
  • cardiac imaging through the Nemours Cardiac Center — national leaders in kids’ heart care
  • EOS low-dose imaging — originally the first pediatric hospital in the Philadelphia and Delaware Valley areas to offer this advanced, radiation-sparing equipment that's significantly safer for children who need multiple X-rays
  • fetal imaging through the Nemours Partners for Perinatal Management, working with expectant families to diagnose fetal problems during pregnancy and create a plan of care, if needed, for after delivery
