Vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) is when urine (pee) flows backward from the bladder to the ureters (the thin, tube-like structures that carry pee from the kidney to the bladder). Many children with VUR are born with the condition. It’s graded on a scale from mild to severe, and some milder cases will go away on their own as your child grows and develops. At Nemours, our pediatric urology specialists will give you all the information you need about vesicoureteral reflux and answer any questions about your treatment options.

Expert VUR Care for Kids
Vesicoureteral Reflux Services We Offer
Most kids with VUR don't show signs or symptoms. Doctors may find the condition because a child has a urinary tract infection (UTI) with a fever. At Nemours, we offer a variety of diagnostic and treatment services, which may vary depending on the condition or location you visit. Your pediatric urologist may order a test called a voiding cystourethrogram (VCUG) that uses X-rays and a special dye to show how your child’s bladder is working. This test can help determine if your child has vesicoureteral reflux.
Depending on the severity of the vesicoureteral reflux in your child, your doctor may discuss several treatment options, including:
- antibiotics to prevent infections
- surgery to repair the ureters
- endoscopic treatment (when a small telescope is inserted through the bladder and a gel is placed at the point where the ureter meets the bladder)
Why Choose Us for VUR Care
At Nemours, our urologists are specialists in urology for kids. They’re board-certified in pediatric urology and highly experienced in minimally invasive procedures (when appropriate) that use a tiny cut instead of a large incision to help kids recover faster, with less pain and scarring. Year after year, many are recognized as Best Doctors in America® , as well as "Top Doctors" by local magazines in our regions.
