Flu Vaccine Basics

The flu vaccine protects your family from the flu. For many people, the flu is more than a seasonal annoyance — it can be dangerous.

Everyone 6 months and older should get a flu vaccine each year. The flu vaccine is safe and it helps protect people from getting seriously ill. The earlier your child gets the flu vaccine, the sooner they will be protected.

The flu vaccine is available both as a shot and as a nasal spray. Ask your child’s doctor which is best for your family.

Is the flu vaccine safe?

Yes.

Does the flu vaccine cause the flu?

No. The flu vaccine cannot give you the flu.

When is flu season?

Flu season usually runs from early fall through spring.

Why does my child need a flu shot every year?

Your body’s immunity against the flu virus declines over time, which is why it’s important to get a flu shot every year.

Who should get the flu shot?

The flu vaccine is recommended for everyone age 6 months and older. It's especially important for people who are at greater risk of having health problems from the flu to get vaccinated.

When should my child get the flu shot?

Getting vaccinated before the flu season is in full force (ideally by the end of October) gives the body a chance to make antibodies that protect from the virus. Even though it's best to get vaccinated as soon as the flu vaccine is available, getting the vaccine later still can be helpful. Even as late as January, there are still a few months left in the flu season, so it's still a good idea to get protected.

Are there side effects?

People might feel sore in the area where they had the shot. A few people get a slight fever. These are just signs that the body is already getting to work building up its defenses against the flu.

Can kids get a COVID-19 vaccine and a flu vaccine at the same time?

Yes. It is safe to get a COVID-19 vaccine along with any other routine vaccine, including the flu vaccine. Learn more about this topic at KidsHealth.org.
