The promise of a healthy tomorrow

Preventing eye disordersVision screening can be one of the most cost-effective clinical preventive services. Yet many children do not have an eye exam until they are in school, when it may be too late for early diagnosis that can alleviate serious eye problems. Jacksonville’s division of ophthalmology and selected community partners developed an interactive CD designed to train pediatricians in vision screening techniques for children ages birth to five years old. Thousands of these CDs have been sent to all general pediatricians and family practitioners in Florida. Nationally, their program is available via the American Academy of Pediatrics web site.

Pioneering robotic surgery

Nemours’ urologists in Jacksonville are helping to pioneer robotic surgery for children who are often under two years of age. The robot is the assistive device for a laparoscopic procedure that provides 3-D imagery and views at 15-times magnification. The benefits of robotic surgery are smaller incisions, smaller scars, faster healing time and less pain.

The Division of Pediatric Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery and Communication Sciences (ENT)
