Anesthesiology

Whether your child requires anesthesia for an outpatient diagnostic procedure, like endoscopy, or major surgery, you can rely on the expertise of Nemours anesthesiologists.

All of our board-certified physicians have advanced training in one or more areas – such as pediatrics, critical care medicine, and anesthesiology – so they’re able to provide the highest quality care to even the youngest or most medically fragile patients.

Additionally, our team believes in a family-centered approach that recognizes the stress any kind of surgical procedure can bring. We offer kid-friendly strategies that parents can use beforehand to lessen their child’s fears and prepare them for the upcoming separation. We take as much time as necessary to answer families’ questions too, because we know that by explaining things in a jargon-free, nuts-and-bolts manner, we can help to alleviate some of the worry and wonder about your child’s anesthesia care.

What We Do

Our anesthesiology staff provides a full range of anesthesia services to children from infancy through the teen years. Here are some things you can expect when you meet with one of our team members:

  • Before the procedure, your child will undergo a thorough evaluation, including a complete medical history, physical exam, and in some cases, lab tests. If your child has a complex history or special medical needs that require expertise from doctors in other fields, we will coordinate that care. Working as a team, we can determine the safest type of anesthesia for your child.
  • During the surgical procedure, we will administer the anesthetic medications and carefully monitor your child’s response throughout the process. Our services are tailored to the type of procedure and the location where it will be done.  Whether providing anesthesia in the operating room, or sedation in the cardiac catheterization lab, the MRI or CT suite, nuclear medicine area, or the endoscopy suite – you can be sure your child’s safety and comfort is our priority at all times.
  • After the procedure, we’ll remain with your child as he or she wakes up and begin to focus on pain management, if necessary. We have an acute pain service dedicated to the care and treatment of postoperative pain.

It’s important to know that a member of our experienced and caring staff will remain with your child at all times, until he or she can be reunited with you. Working with the rest of the surgical team, we’ll help determine when your child can be discharged.
