Collaborating for Kids
Because children are different from adults and need specialized care, Nemours collaborates with Nanticoke Memorial Hospital to extend advanced, round-the-clock pediatric care to children and families in southern Delaware and Maryland.
Our pediatricians work alongside Nanticoke's own highly trained nursing staff, pharmacists, therapists and social workers to provide expert pediatric care in the hospital's emergency department and pediatric unit.
Nemours and Nanticoke also work together to:
- coordinate care, when needed, with our specialists at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Del.
- facilitate the transfer of extremely ill patients to duPont Hospital for Children
About Nanticoke Memorial Hospital
Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, a general medical and surgical hospital in Seaford, Del., has been recognized for its quality of care and is accredited by the Joint Commission Accreditation survey, the gold standard in health care.
The 120-bed hospital offers critical and emergency care, maternity and women’s health, diagnostic and interventional cardiology, a certified stroke center, a vascular center and many outpatient and therapy services. In addition, Nanticoke’s Cancer Care Center, partnered with Peninsula Regional's Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute, gives area cancer patients access to a comprehensive array of cancer services and clinical trials.
The hospital annually provides outpatient services and testing for more than 60,000 patients, treats more than 37,000 patients in its emergency room, and admits more than 5,000 patients. Its physicians perform more than 1,000 inpatient and 2,500 outpatient surgeries each year.
Emergency and Trauma Care
Nanticoke Memorial Hospital provides 24-hour emergency care and is a certified Level III Trauma Center — meaning they don't have the full availability of specialists, but do have resources for emergency resuscitation, surgery and intensive care of most trauma patients. A Level III center also has transfer agreements with Level I or Level II trauma centers that provide back-up resources for the care of exceptionally severe injuries.
Their emergency department features a treatment room designed especially for children, painted in a kid-friendly, relaxing theme. There's a children's play space in the waiting area — behind glass, to keep the noise levels down for the rest of waiting room. To help children stay occupied during any waits, there's also an art cart filled with art supplies and activities.
