Nephrology

Nemours provides consultation, evaluation, management and treatment for children with acute and chronic kidney problems. A multi-disciplinary approach to patient care is offered to all patients. We focus on the care of infants, children, and adolescents with specific diagnoses and problems relating to the kidneys and bladder. Working side by side with additional specialists, the nephrology staff is capable of offering the up-to-date and effective treatment and care for the young patient.

The most common kidney diseases in children are present at birth and include posterior urethral valve obstruction, fetal hydronephrosis, polycystic kidney disease, multicystic kidney disease, Wilms tumor, tubular acidosis, glomerulonephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and congenital problems with the urinary tract. Problems that develop later in children include urinary tract infections, high blood pressure or hypertension (which affect the function of the kidneys), kidney stones and nephritis.

The signs and symptoms of urinary tract or kidney problems are diverse and include:

• Fever;
• Swelling around the eyes, face, feet, and ankles (also known as edema);
• Burning or pain during urination;
• Significant increase in the frequency of urination;
• Difficulty in controlling urination in children who are mature enough to use the toilet
• Recurrence of nighttime bedwetting (in children who have been dry for several months);
• Blood in the urine; and
• High blood pressure.
