Pediatric Pulmonology Fellowship
Thomas Jefferson University & Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children
The Mission
The goal of the Pediatric Pulmonology Fellowship Program is to train physicians:
- in diagnostic and therapeutic methods for inpatient, outpatient and consultative pediatric pulmonary medicine;
- to provide a strong clinical expertise in the care of children with a myriad of pulmonary disorders;
- to educate physician colleagues in pulmonary diseases;
- to advance medical research in the field of pulmonary medicine through clinical- or laboratory-based research projects;
- to prepare for and develop their pulmonary professional career.
The Fellowship
This ACGME-accredited 3-year program balances clinical experience with research training. The clinical experience is made up of a balance of inpatient and outpatient opportunities to refine clinical skills. These skills include diagnosis and care of children with disorders of the upper airway, congenital disorders of the lower airways, asthma, bronchiolitis, cystic fibrosis, interstitial lung disease, pneumonia, disorders of the chest wall/diaphragm/pleural space, acute lung diseases of the newborn infant, respiratory failure, aspiration/inhalation injuries, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, pulmonary vascular diseases in childhood, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), pulmonary manifestations of immune suppression, control of breathing disorders including sleep disorders, and miscellaneous lung disease. The inpatient pulmonary team serves as the primary care team for the inpatient pulmonary service as well as consultants to the general pediatrics, rehabilitative, orthopedic/surgical, PICU, NICU, and CICU care teams. Additionally, elective time is available to individualize clinical experience towards professional goals.
The research education begins with training in biostatistics, lab research methodology, clinical research methodology, study design, grant preparation, and preparation of protocols for the institutional review board (IRB). The research component of the fellowship is then tailored to the interest and professional career plan of the fellow but may include laboratory research in our NIH-funded lung center or clinical research with application for funding from both institutional and outside sources. While research funding is encouraged and supported, it is not a requirement to maintain the fellowship position during any year.
Pulmonology Division
The Pulmonology Division consists of six pediatric pulmonologists including multiple dual-boarded physicians (e.g. Pediatric Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics), four nurse practitioners, one nurse, and two coordinators. The Pulmonology Division performs over 1500 new outpatient evaluations annually and over 130 bronchoscopic evaluations. The inpatient experience includes a significant consultative role with over 350 inpatient consults and 200 inpatient admissions annually. The four-bed sleep laboratory performs over 700 polysomnograms annually. The Cystic Fibrosis-accredited CF Center cares for over 100 patients with CF, participates as a research center in the Therapeutics Development Network and has multiple active research protocols. Additionally, the division has an active role in teaching residents and medical students.
