Get to Know Me
At Nemours, we treat a lot of children who have complicated neurological problems. I feel strongly that each child, each family, deserves my best, and the best that anyone can provide. I am proud of my choice to align my career with the Nemours Foundation, because I identify with Alfred duPont’s statement, “I have always believed that it is incumbent on every man to do their utmost to relieve human suffering.”
Why I Treat Children
Although I had a degree in theoretical mathematics, several members of my family were in the medical field and served as role models. I was as surprised as anyone to learn I had a talent for treating children. But that was the inspiring feedback from my mentors. I only discovered my interest in neurology after I decided on pediatrics. And looking back, I realize both decisions were exactly right.
How I Try to Make A Difference
I co-founded and serve as board chair and medical director at a chronic care facility for children in Newark, Delaware. We provide comprehensive care for children who don’t need to be in an acute care hospital, but are too sick to go home. I am the program director of our child neurology residency and the pediatric epilepsy fellowship, through the Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University. This permits me to participate in the education of the next generation of pediatric neurologists and epilepsy specialists, who will carry on the science and philosophy of treating these children. I am an active participant in our Pride Associate Resource group, because I believe everyone contributes equal effort to achieving our goals, and everyone deserves authentically equal recognition for doing their part to relieve human suffering.
