Get to Know Me

I’m driven to constantly improve the level of health care that we deliver to kids, including using the latest technology and treatments to help address the medical problems.

Why I Treat Children

There are two main reasons I choose to treat children. First I enjoy helping the youngest, smallest children, knowing that something we do now can help a little one throughout his or her life, making an impact not just for a day but for 80 years or more. Also, I like using science to solve problems. In fact, I was a scientist and worked in the lab that was the first to describe HIV resistance in pediatric patients. I see medical problems as puzzles, ones that we can solve with our knowledge of how the body functions, the clues our patients reveal, our experience with other cases, new technologies, and treatments.

What I'm Passionate About

I’m passionate about family-centered care. We don’t just treat the baby — we also have to take good care of the baby’s family. It’s a unit — we can’t take care of one without the other.I’m also passionate about quality and that we, as caregivers, provide the very best care possible. I believe we need to constantly ask ourselves if we’re doing things in the right and most effective way. The test is if we can go home at night and say, without hesitation, that we did all that we could.

How I Try to Make A Difference

I try to make a difference in several ways. I always strive to advance the care we provide — for example, applying technology like ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) to the medical problems of our youngest patients. But the medicine we practice is only the first part. I also try to connect with each and every family. Communicating with the family (not just talking at them) about what we’re doing for their child and why, is just as important.

Research Activities

My primary research interests revolve around ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation — a method used in intensive care medicine to give babies external cardiac and respiratory oxygen support). I’ve always been fascinated with science and our ability to apply technology to specific medical problems, to help as many people as possible.

One example of this is the use of adult learning theory to teach to health care professionals procedures (like ECMO) that require a high level of precision, detail and technology. The challenge is to teach it in such a way as to have those professionals retain the skills even when they may not perform the procedure frequently enough to make the skills second nature. To do this, we’ve developed ECMO simulation education.
