Get to Know Me
Dr. Tetsu Uejima is a pediatric anesthesiologist and chair of the Department of Anesthesiology & Critical Care. He’s also professor of clinical anesthesiology at Thomas Jefferson University; a member of the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia; an international presenter; and an author of many peer-reviewed articles, book chapters and abstracts. Why I Treat Children
Treating children really suits my personality. I really appreciate their openness and the way they can see everyone for who they really are. They’re different from adults — they’re not just little people. In general, they’re healthier than adults and really do their best to listen to your medical suggestions. And, after all, who doesn’t like kids? What I'm Passionate About
I’m passionate about providing excellent clinical care — in the care I deliver personally and in the care my department and hospital as a whole delivers. In surgery, the patients can’t speak for themselves and, since anesthesiologists are so closely monitoring the children and their vital signs, we’re really their advocates and look out for their overall health. In my own practice and in my department, I have a low tolerance for mediocrity and complacency — there’s no place for either when it comes to taking care of children. I do all I can to be the best physician I can be, and expect the same from every member of the Department of Anesthesiology & Critical Care Medicine. I constantly remind each of the physicians in the department what they already know — that we have to go the extra mile for each and every child, and treat them just like we would our very own children. I also work to have the hospital as a whole be its very best.I love what I do!How I Try to Make A Difference
I went into medicine to make a difference for people. And every day I leave the hospital, I feel like I did make a difference for my patients — in my own practice and by guiding the practice of the physicians in my department. I became a department chair for that very reason — so I could make a difference on a larger scale. That’s why I obtained my Master of Medical Management (MMM) degree and Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM) certification. They helped me further develop my leadership skills and see the big picture from a hospital-wide perspective. Prior to joining Nemours, I gained valuable experience in hospital administration and ensuring patient safety hospital-wide. I draw upon that experience to help our hospital and the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children Surgery Center, Bryn Mawr be the best they can be.Education & Training
