I’m from a small coal-mining community in Eastern Kentucky. Seeing the poor and medically underserved in my hometown played a significant role in my decision to become a physician. I spent most of my life in Kentucky, followed by two years in Augusta, Ga., for my fellowship. I now have the privilege of calling Orlando home.
Why I Treat Children
I have always related to children, being a bit of a big kid myself. As a doctor I have a unique chance to be a positive role model and to impact them for their whole lives. In pediatrics a doctor also has to meet the emotional needs of parents. I feel privileged when a family trusts their child to my care.
What I'm Passionate About
Patient and family education. Typically we see the patient for an hour, then send parents home to put the treatment plan into action. Therefore, my best plan is only as good as their understanding and dedication allow. So it is crucial that I make parents part of the care team and thoroughly explain the choices I make for their children.
Make A Difference
I spend part of my time teaching medical students as an associate professor at the University of Central Florida College of Medicine. It is important to me to share what I’ve learned with people who are the future of medicine.
What I Do For Fun
Music is one of my biggest interests outside of medicine. I play several instruments and go to every concert I can. Another thing I enjoy about life in Central Florida is the abundance of authentic local restaurants in and around Orlando.
