Expertise When Your Child Needs It Most

A young patient in the emergency medicine department

At Nemours’ fully equipped Emergency Departments (EDs, often called Emergency Rooms or ERs), our highly trained doctors are board-certified in both pediatrics and pediatric emergency medicine. Together with nurses and paramedics, we’re dedicated to providing pediatric emergency medicine for kids from birth to age 18. That means we understand children’s symptoms, conditions and injuries — and how to diagnose and treat them with special kid-friendly care.

Conditions We Treat

Conditions We Treat

Our Emergency Departments are fully equipped to handle life-threatening, very serious illnesses and injuries any time, day or night. We see a full spectrum of conditions — far too many to list here. Don’t see a condition listed? Call us.

But definitely go to the ED if your child has:

  • trouble breathing or shortness of breath
  • unusual sleepiness or confusion
  • a stiff neck and a fever
  • a continuous fast heartbeat
  • swallowed any poison, drug, or unknown substance
  • a head injury and is vomiting
  • an injury to the eye

Why Choose Us

Why Choose Us

At community hospitals, doctors who are trained in caring for patients of all ages see kids who come to the Emergency Department. But at Nemours EDs, children are treated by true experts trained and experienced in emergency medicine specifically for kids. Our ED physicians are also actively involved in clinical research. That leads to a better understanding of why kids get sick or injured — and how we can help them. Because of our expertise, we’re often invited to lecture locally and nationally on emergency medicine topics.

And, if your child needs to see a doctor in a particular specialty, our Nemours specialists are all just a quick call away. We’ll keep your child’s primary care doctor updated too, to make sure everyone involved in your child’s care knows what’s going on.
