Less Hurting, More Healing

Nemours Children's pain management specialists do everything they can to give children peace from pain. We understand the physical, emotional and social disruption pain causes.

Our team uses innovative therapies to strengthen body, mind and spirit. We offer inpatient pain management programs where your child stays overnight. We also provide outpatient programs that promote wellness and help children and teens return to everyday participation and functioning at home, at school and at play.

We work to reduce medicines as much as we can. We may use rehabilitation therapies, behavioral health therapies, nutritional counseling and integrative approaches like massage, relaxation and yoga.

We work together as a team to care for your child, and your whole family. We offer counseling and support services so you can help your child feel better inside and out.

Delaware Valley/Philadelphia Highlights

  • We care for the whole family. Our pediatric pain program is among only a handful in the country that also offers healing services for the entire family.
  • We’re leaders in the field. We have given 60 local, national, and international lectures about pediatric chronic pain.
  • We’re trying to improve access to care. The pain team is examining unequal access to pediatric chronic pain programs and is using a screening tool to make referrals easier.
  • We know how to talk to kids. Sometimes it’s hard for kids to express how they feel. Our experts know how pain shows in children in all ages and abilities, even in babies who can’t tell us where it hurts.
  • 10+ Specialties we work closely with
  • 4 Weeks, the average length of an intensive outpatient program
  • 6-12 Weeks, average length of once-a-week outpatient visits

Florida Highlights

  • Our team is led by one of the world’s top pain specialists. You child’s care is managed by a renowned specialist who is board-certified in both pain management and pediatric anesthesiology.
  • We offer an integrated, intensive outpatient pain program. Our multiweek program helps kids with ongoing pain that lasts longer than three to six months.
  • We have one of only four multispecialty pediatric inpatient rehab programs in the state. Ours is one of four in Florida, and the only one in Central Florida, with this level of coordinated care. We’re also the only inpatient rehab program in Florida at a hospital completely dedicated to kids.
  • We are experts in treating complex regional pain syndrome. Our team-based approach to CRPS (also known as reflex sympathetic dystrophy) allows us to shorten the time between diagnosis and treatment by months — or years.

  • We evaluate and begin treatment quickly. Pain can be hard to diagnose. We know what to look for and can bring in the right specialists early on. This may mean therapy starts sooner, and your child feels better faster.
  • We help your child understand pain signals. Our team explains how pain impacts the body, and how to control it. This information empowers your child to overcome pain physically and mentally.
  • We offer a range of safe pain medicines. We use safe medicines, and only when needed. We may use oral, intravenous (IV), injected, epidural (with a tiny tube in the back) or patient-controlled delivery methods.
