Pediatric Sports Medicine Conditions We Treat

Pediatric Sports Medicine Conditions We Treat

Our Nemours sports medicine specialists treat one-time injuries and chronic (ongoing) problems that develop over time. We see kids for all kinds of pediatric sports medicine injuries and conditions such as:

  • anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) sprain or tear (the ACL is one of the four tough, flexible bands of connective tissue that connects the bones of the thigh, knee and shin)
  • broken bones (fractures)
  • burners (also called "brachial plexus injuries" or "stingers" — injuries to the nerve network that provides feeling and muscle control in the shoulder, arm, forearm, hand and fingers)
  • bursitis (a painful condition caused by swelling around the fluid-filled sac — a bursa — that acts as a cushion in a joint)
  • cartilage damage (a tear in the firm, flexible connective tissue found in joints)
  • concussions (an injury to the brain caused by a hit or fall)
  • dislocations (injuries where bones are knocked out of their normal positions)
  • impingement (when one part of the body, such as a tendon, rubs on a bone and causes pain, most often in the shoulder)
  • Jumper's knee (also called "patellar tendonitis" or "patellar tendinopathy" — swelling or an injury of the patellar tendon, the cord-like tissue that joins the kneecap to the shin bone)
  • ligament, tendon and soft tissue tears (most often in the ankle, knee and hip)
  • Little League elbow (an overuse injury from too much throwing, affecting the area of growing bone on the inside of the elbow)
  • loose bodies (broken-off fragments of bone and/or cartilage, most often in the ankle and elbow)
  • medial collateral ligament (MCL) injury (when there's a tear in the MCL — a rope-like band ligament that helps give the knee its stability)
  • meniscus damage (a tear in the connective tissue of the knee)
  • Osgood-Schlatter disease (swelling in the tendon that attaches the kneecap to the shinbone)
  • osteochondritis dissecans (when a small piece of bone in the knee loses blood supply and breaks off)
  • patellar instability (when the patella, or kneecap, is moved out of place)
  • rotator cuff injuries (damage to the muscle around the shoulder, especially from the throwing and hitting motions in baseball, tennis and volleyball)
  • Sever's disease (a painful bone disorder that results from swelling of the growth plate in the heel)
  • shin splints (pain along the middle of the shin due to overuse from running or jumping)
  • spondylolisthesis (when one spine bone slips in relation to the one below it)
  • sprains (when ligaments — strong, elastic bands of tissue that hold bones together in the joints — overstretch or tear)
  • strains (when a muscle or tendon — the tissue that attaches muscle to bone — is stretched too far)
  • tendonitis (pain from swelling in the tissue that connects a muscle to bone)
  • tennis elbow (pain and swelling of the tendons in the forearm, caused by overuse of the wrist and forearm, not just from tennis)

We see a full spectrum of conditions — far too many to list here. The conditions we treat vary depending on the location and providers selected. Don’t see a condition listed? Call us.
