International Orthopedic Expertise — Paula's Story

Paula was born with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), causing her bones to be very brittle. She started to develop a progressive spinal curvature called scoliosis. Our specialized OI program combines orthopedics, spine surgery, and genetics expertise to best provide care for children with OI like Paula. At age eight, she underwent selective thoracic fusion to restore torso length, improve breathing, and treat the severe curve. Later, the team addressed her lumbar curve, achieving balance and growth. Today, Paula is thriving, thanks to the collaborative care of the Nemours Children’s International Medicine and Orthopedics teams.

Lifesaving Care Half a World Away — Alek’s Story

Alek is a teen from Poland with a condition called severe kyphoscoliosis, which meant he had trouble breathing, couldn’t eat or walk, and lived in chronic pain. His family learned of the expertise at Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware. Working with Dr. Suken Shah, Alek had successful advanced surgery and postsurgery rehabilitation. Today, Alek can eat, breathe, and walk without pain. He continues rehabilitation and massage sessions in Poland, and travels back to Nemours for yearly consultation visits.

Going the Distance — Gerhard's Story

15 year-old Gerhard and his family traveled quite a way to find the necessary expertise for spine surgery that he desperately needed — all the way from their Amish colony near the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, to Nemours Children's Hospital, Delaware. There, the teen had successful surgery and made a remarkable recovery, thanks to the work of the orthopedics team, skilled translators (the family only speaks spanish and a rare dialect of German), Child Life specialists, and many more.
