Autism Spectrum Disorder

Comprehensive Care and Resources for Kids and Families Managing ASD

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a brain disorder that starts early in life. It affects communication skills and social interaction and includes repetitive behaviors. Early intervention is proven to significantly improve symptoms and offer your child the best chance to adapt, grow and thrive into adulthood. Our expert teams in Florida’s Early Autism Intervention Program and at the Swank Autism Center in Delaware provide comprehensive autism evaluations and treatment plans to meet the unique needs of your child and family.

Services We Offer for Autism Spectrum Disorder

At Nemours, we diagnose autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other conditions that can go along with it. Services vary by specialist and location, but may include:

  • assistive technology — tools and devices to help kids with ASD communicate or learn
  • behavioral health and therapy — specialists in diagnosing and treating child behavioral issues and mental health problems that can come with ASD
  • Child Life specialists — licensed clinicians who help your child and family cope with health conditions and doctor visits using therapeutic play and other methods that reduce fear, worry and pain
  • developmental behavioral pediatrics — specialists to diagnose and monitor your child’s physical, emotional, behavioral or social development (including medication management, if needed)
  • feeding therapy — specially trained therapists to encourage your child to eat a variety of foods and address negative mealtime behaviors
  • genetic testing — to advise your family about genetic testing and to help with diagnosis (children diagnosed with ASD may have a genetic condition such as Williams syndrome or other medical conditions that need care)
  • occupational therapy — helps with fine motor skills, visual motor skills and functional cognitive (thinking) skills
  • physical medicine and rehabilitation — physical and speech therapy
  • social workers — to support your child and family and connect you to community, educational, government and other resources

Why Choose Us for Autism Spectrum Disorder Diagnosis and Support

Diagnosing children with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is complex and requires comprehensive evaluation by experienced pediatric specialists in different medical disciplines. Our teams — which may include psychologists and psychiatrists, child neurologists, neuropsychologists, developmental pediatricians, occupational/speech and language therapists, and applied behavior analysis therapists — are experts at managing ASD to address the immediate and the long-term needs of your child and family.

Nemours specialists create personalized ASD treatment plans. This is because while all children with ASD have difficulties along one or more of the same areas of development, they do not share the exact same symptoms or patterns of behavior. We work with you to help your child have the brightest future possible.
