Giving Kids With Liver Tumors Options — and Hope

Transarterial radioembolization with Yttrium-90, or TARE-Y90. for short, is a targeted, image-guided radiation therapy to treat liver tumors. Nemours is one of few pediatric hospitals in the country to offer this advanced treatment for children. We give kids with liver cancer new hope and options when other treatments have failed.

Y90 is a radioactive material that destroys tumors. It’s delivered through the arteries in and around tumors using small, flexible tubes called catheters. This method is referred to as transarterial. The catheters are inserted through the leg/groin area using tiny cuts. When radioactive materials are given this way, it’s called radioembolization.

Nemours interventional radiologists have extensive expertise in TARE-Y90. We use highly specialized equipment to precisely view and target the tumor. This helps to protect healthy liver tissue. In many cases, TARE-Y90 therapy gives kids with liver cancer a fighting chance to grow up healthy.

We’re One of Few Hospitals to Offer TARE-Y90 Therapy for Kids

If your child has liver cancer, you want the best possible treatment. Nemours is one of only a few children’s hospitals to perform TARE-Y90. We offer potentially life-saving liver tumor treatment that you can’t find everywhere.

  • We’re highly skilled in TARE-Y90. Nemours has one of the nation’s few pediatric interventional radiologists trained in TARE-Y90. You can trust your child will get the highest level of expertise available.
  • We have one of the largest, most qualified programs. Ours is one of the largest pediatric interventional radiology groups in the country and some of our radiologists are among a few hundred who are dual fellowship trained. This means they’re trained in both pediatric diagnostic radiology and interventional radiology.
  • We’re part of a renowned pediatric cancer center. The Nemours Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders is a multisite center that brings together advanced clinical care and research. As one of the largest in the nation, our team works together across locations to treat the rarest and most complex liver tumors in children.
  • We’re leaders in liver tumor surgery and transplantation. TARE-Y90 therapy may shrink a tumor enough for surgical removal. Our liver surgery team is skilled in advanced methods that use small cuts for a faster recovery. If your child needs a liver transplant, we offer recognized transplant services within our system.
