Pulmonary Stenosis

Expert Care for Your Child's Heart

Teen girl with pulmonary stenosis gives thumbs up sign.

Pulmonary stenosis is a congenital (present at birth) heart defect that refers to narrowing (stenosis) of the pulmonary valve. Since this happens while a baby’s heart is developing, doctors can often identify it before birth. At Nemours, we offer leading-edge capabilities to detect heart problems early, including babies still in the womb — giving children the best chance.

You can trust the pediatric heart care in our Nemours Cardiac Center to coordinate your child’s care from diagnosis to treatment. Our board-certified, fellowship-trained pediatric cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons (specialists in surgical procedures of the chest, including the heart and lungs) are here to answer your questions, address your concerns and offer treatment options. We work closely with you and your family to provide support and services every step of the way.

Services We Offer for Pulmonary Stenosis

Services We Offer for Pulmonary Stenosis

The expert teams in our Nemours Cardiac Center locations offer a full range of pediatric heart care to diagnose and treat pulmonary artery sling. Services vary by specialist and location, but may include:

  • Fetal Diagnostics. Early detection in our perinatology and fetal medicine centers help us diagnose some congenital heart defects and make a treatment plan for when your baby’s born.
  • Cardiac Diagnostic Testing. State-of-the-art, noninvasive and minimally invasive tests for kids of all ages, including an echocardiogram (“echo”) used to diagnose pulmonary stenosis.
  • Cardiology. Non-surgical heart care and monitoring that includes medications to treat and control the symptoms of pulmonary stenosis.
  • Cardiac Catheterization. Procedures like a balloon valvuloplasty may be used to help open the heart valve using a catheter (thin, flexible tube) with a tiny balloon on the tip.
  • Heart Surgery. In some cases, surgery to completely replace the pulmonary valve may be the best option.
  • Nutritional Education. To help your child eat heart-healthy today and for the future.
